Willie Mitchell for sure. There are other fine Canucks who could be considered (Ohlund, Bieksa or Kesler for example), but I think that Mitchell has the best personality for the job. Of course, coming from BC is another bonus from the franchises perspective.

Hey, glad to see posts popping up here again! The new site looks great, too.

I’m agreed on Willie Mitchell. He’s a rock solid player, good with the media, and local. Not a star captain, but that’s fine — more of Jason Smith type (please don’t lambaste me for mentioning an ex-Oiler in a positive light….I always liked Smith’s game).

That’s the view from the outside, though…I do wonder how he’s perceived in the dressing room. Who are his friends on the team? Is he generally well liked, and do they listen when he talks? Have he and Vigneault worked things out? Those same questions would apply to any other potential captain too, and I don’t see any better candidates.

I agree with making Willie Mitchell the captain. Both Kesler and Bieksa are still too inexperienced and the added pressure may impede their performance (and the Canucks sure don’t need that).

BTW, the move to WordPress was a good choice. Looking forward to a new season on the new site.

    Hi fellow hockey-freaks!

My vote HAS to be for Bieska! Not only is he young and the face of the new generation for the Canucks but his tenacity on the ice cannot be denied. What happens in the dressing room, as in his leadership skills, I have no idea… but I am sure he is respected and would be welcomed as their leader. (plus I have a signed rookie card of Bieska so I am looking to increase the value!!! :-).. lol)

At the risk of agreeing with everyone, I’d also vote for Willie Mitchell. My rationale is twofold: an important role of the captain is to be the spokesperson. When I’ve heard him in the media he has always been very comfortable and insightful versus the usual “player-speak”. Secondly, I’ve been to a Canuck event and seen him interact with his teammates – especially Luongo. That gives me confidence he’d bring the leadership and personality the team needs.

  17. ok, sorry to join in on the apparent Willie bandwagon, but I have been on that wagon since Willie arrived.

We need a local boy that is tough enough to stand up for his team and has enough hockey sense to be a strong Captain.

I think Willie has shown leadership since he arrived and his teammates respect him.

    Go Willie!

How about “None of the above.”? I don’t know if it’s completely unheard of for a team to start a season without a Captain – but what if they just assigned a couple A’s and no C? If there’s no clear winner now, why rush to squeeze someone in if the fit’s not right, or not apparent? I would think that they could name a few A’s, and out of those, pick a temporary (stand-in) captain who would talk to the refs when needed. Willie, Bieska, and Kesler could be candidates – without being committal.

  23. @ Jeremy – Good question about his relationship with AV, though in hindsight, I wonder if that was a result of some frustration and some media overreaction. As for who he hangs out with the team? I don’t know. I know Naslund and Kesler hung out quite a bit and same with Ohlund and the Sedins. I remember back when Schaeffer and Brashear were notorious for partying together. Anyway, I don’t know if Mitchell has his own ‘clique’ but that’s not probably a good thing.

@ Jim L – Very true on him being comfortable with the media. Can never underestimate how important that is in this market.

@KevinK – I suppose that’s a possibility as well. It’s certainly not uncommon to not appoint a captain short-term or even just have the captains rotate. (Actually, my feeling right now is that the Canucks might do the latter.) Sooner rather than later though, I think the Canucks – read: Mike Gillis – would want to pick a captain to help define the team.

  25. Mitchell hands down. He’s so bloody reliable. A BC Boy. Would take pride in that role.
He has that calming effect because he seems stable out there. And you can see him talking to and encouraging the players on the ice and bench a lot.
Whoa, JJ, the new site looks tremendous. Nice work!
Not sure when I’ll switch over to WordPress. But seeing your transition has got me tempted.

I think Willie Mitchell should be the canucks captain. He is very dedicated and willing to do anything to help the team. Mitchell would also make a great captain because he can focus on that as well as playing at the same time, and showing great teamwork.

@ Justin – Darcy’ll have my vote the first time he knocks down Sean Avery. See if he can put those MMA lessons to good use.

I believe that Willie Mitchell will be given the C. Saying this, I don’t believe this to be the best choice. Our new captain should be a player who will be with the team for a long time to come. My top choice would be a young player like raymond or bieksa. I also like the idea of having rotating captaincy. But seeing that Mitchell is the top choice, I will be happy with this. He’s a strong leader who is good in the public eye and a strong leader on the team

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Willie Mitchell..

My second choice would be Bieksa, my favourite Canuck.

  39. So with the help of Excel’s random number picker, I’ve picked out the winner for the preseason tickets on Tuesday.

Congrats to JimL! (I just sent you an email so we can arrange to meet and I can give you the tickets.)

And a big thanks to everyone who put their two cents in. I think I’ll keep this as a featured post for the next week only because the Canucks haven’t picked a captain just yet.

So my vote is for Kesler! I think he can handle the pressure and I think he’ll be the face of the canucks for years to come….and he’s a big fan fav.

To MarcA: About Loungo being Capt. You can’t have a goalie as a captian any longer. There was a rule change like 20 years ago or something that says goalies can’t be the C! This is because only the C can discuss plays and things with the ref and it is not reasonable for the goalie to skate to the other end of the ice on some plays to discuss plays.

I would like to add that if it’s not Kesler then Willie is definitely my 2nd choice!

I think willie mitchell should be the canucks capian. First of all he’s a great roll model.
Also he can focus on leading his team instead of being the best player on the team or score the most goals. GO WILLIE GO!!!!

I think the two a’s should be Morrison and Bieksa
