Because I’m on the road, I missed the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. I’m not complaining (it was probably a good thing). Still, here are some random thoughts on what has transpired so far this week.

On the injuries:

It took all of two weeks before Sami Salo and Pavol Demitra suffered their first injuries of the season. Like Alanah said, only Kyle Wellwood benefits from those injuries. And maybe Jason Krog (Gordon McIntyre, Vancouver Province). The scary thing is, the top part of the Canucks lineup is already becoming reminiscent of last year’s.

Darcy Hordichuk was at practice yesterday and should be ready to go tomorrow which means Mike Brown will probably return to the press box.

And speaking of Mike Brown…

Part of the reason Matt Pettinger was sent to the Manitoba Moose was because there were rumblings that a few teams were interested in Mike Brown and that Brown would be claimed if he was sent down. Brown stayed, of course, but has only appeared in 2 games with ice-times of 3:16 and 3:37 minutes. Because Tampa Bay claimed Pettinger off re-entry waivers, the Canucks are on the hook for half of Pettinger’s salary and cap hit.

There are a couple of ways to look at this.

If Pettinger had stayed, his cap hit would have been $1 million. Brown’s cap hit is $522,250, but add $500,000 the Canucks are on the hook for (half of Pettinger’s $1 million cap hit) and that 13th forward roster spot now comes at a cap cost of $1,022,250 plus losing Pettinger as an asset.

The other way to look at this is that the team actually saves money from this transaction. Combined, the team was paying $1,622,250 for one player on the Canucks roster and one player on the Moose roster. Now, they only need to pay out $1,072,250 (Brown’s $522,250 and Pettinger’s $550,000), a savings of $550,000.

However, I think the bigger issue is the asset management issue. Is Brown that much more valuable than Pettinger?

Brown’s value to the team is his energy and toughness, and besides getting into a couple of fights in the two games he’s played so far, he hasn’t provided much else. Plus, with Hordichuk and Rypien already on the team, did the Canucks need a third “enforcer” on the roster? In an ideal scenario, we should never see all three in the lineup at the same time.

At least Pettinger is capable of playing a regular shift. He’s not flashy by any means, but he can adequately play on the third or fourth line and the penalty-kill. He might not score 20 goals again, but I would dare say that he has better hands than Mike Brown.

After the Canucks lost Nathan Maciver to waivers, Mike Gillis said he didn’t want to lose another player to nothing. Well, oops. I suppose either Brown or Pettinger would have been claimed. The question is, did the Canucks try to keep the right one?

Some people seem really high on Mike Brown, but I can’t say that I’ve seen enough of him to know why. Seemed like Pettinger was a proven NHL regular, and relatively cheap…but I guess he had a terrible camp and a very short history with the team, so they cut him loose. They had to know he’d get claimed, just based on his reputation and past points. Wonder if someone bluffed the ‘nucks by making them believe Brown would get claimed — why would anyone else have their eye on him? Oops, forgot about Burke for a second there.
    : )

As far as injuries go, I wasn’t a fan of that ridiculous offer to Sundin in the off-season…but I certainly wouldn’t object to them blowing all that cap space on a Sundin-caliber player right now. Too bad Bernier looks a bit hot ‘n cold — when he’s on, he looks amazing…but when he’s not…ugh.

Yeah it’s a shame that Sundin wasn’t given up on and a different forward signed instead.

I personally think Taylor Pyatt has been shocking this season and really doesn’t deserve to be on the team. The improvement in his play we have been patiently waiting for since he came from the Sabres just hasn’t arrived. Imo he is this season’s Jan Bulis – bringing the team down. It seems every line he appears on is cursed with poor production and possession.

If it wasn’t for his size and that he can just about make the standard for passing and skating he wouldn’t be in the NHL, that’s for sure. You’d think he was a lot smaller than Steve Bernier from their comparitive play on the ice though. I see Steve Bernier, 4 years younger than Pyatt, and his style of play as a good example of what everyone was hoping Pyatt would turn into, but it just hasn’t happened and I don’t think it’s going to. Watching him this season, his 37 points in the past two season seem like flukes, largely thanks to playing a lot with the Sedins back then.

Imo the Canucks should try hard to trade Pyatt and a D-man for a decent Right Wing who isn’t afraid to use his weight/strength/speed/skill.

You can’t get rid of Taylor Pylon. Too many girls would have their hearts broken (roll eyes)

Rypien is now out with a Sports hernia that he will have operated on tomorrow. There goes his iron man streak.

I am pretty pissed off that we lost Pettinger. The guy was great on the PK and was one of the quicker canucks as well. I think it was the first ‘mistake’ that Gillis has made so far.

Brown is a player that is a dime a dozen. Easy to find. Pettinger was more important to the team I think.

Hey JJ I just want to say keep up the good work.

In terms of Pettinger, I’m not that heartbroken about it as some others. I just am a bit apprehensive with the depth on the Moose.

Although I do like the fact we have about 9 million dollars and change to play around with via cap space.

I know he gets low ice time but how does hordichuk have no points in 12 games and has been in what one fight? and has had 3 hits? add that to mike “i think i’m tough” brown “but really all i do is wrestle bigger guys” and we really need to rethink our fourth line. Our d can handle fights and thus I say put pyatt where he belongs…………..the fourth line with johnson and ONE of either of our so called tough guys……..the dude has one goal and 3 assists in 14 games with good icetime you have to get him on our fourth line NOW………get grabner up here while demitra is out if we have to but i can’t watch pyatt on the second line any longer and our tough guys need to uhhhh be tough?
