It’s not uncommon for downtown Vancouver nightclubs to ban Ed Hardy and Charles Audigier attire, but banning Canucks jerseys? Seriously?

From the CBC:

Playoff fever may be sweeping the city, but infected Vancouver Canucks fans are not always welcome in at least one downtown pub.

Mark James told CBC News he was kicked out of the Library Square Pub on West Georgia Street for wearing a Canucks jersey immediately after the team won its second playoff game against St. Louis on Friday night.

The reason?

“The reasoning was dress code. The jersey is not a part of their dress code,” James said.

A spokesperson for the Library Square Pub told CBC News the pub has a ‘no jerseys’ rule after 10 p.m. to discourage rival fans from fighting.

There was probably a ton of St. Louis fans at the pub on Friday night.

Funny thing is, the pub manager has a conflicting story than his own spokesperson.

The pub manager said James and his friend were not kicked out because of their jerseys, but because they were drunk.

They deny they were intoxicated or acting rowdy, but admit they did argue with the pub staff over the jersey rule.

I’ve been to the Library Square Pub a few times and even watched a playoff game there once. The time I was there to watch the game, I left immediately afterwards so I don’t know if they would have applied the jersey rule. (Also, this was a couple of years ago.)

I realize this could very well be a “he said, he said” thing. That the rule even exists though makes me wonder how Library Square stereotypes the good folks who live or visit this city. To me, it says that the suit-types don’t cause any problems and the Canucks jersey-types do. That’s a horrible stereotype if you ask me.

(As a side note, I’ve been to pubs in other cities where they have the jersey rule but it only applies to fans of opposing teams. Personally, I think this makes more sense – keep the locals and repeat business happy while at the same time discouraging any violence.)

    Hey JJ:

I’ve actually gone to Library Square many nights with a Canucks jersey on. I’ve never heard of anyone being turned away because of that. Just saying.

Did you stay past 10? I’ve gone there with my jersey too but I’ve always left before 10. Curious as that’s when most home games end (close to 10 anyway) and it seems silly to ask fans to take them off if they go there after leaving GM Place.
