There’s some speculation that the NHL is considering a doubleheader for next season’s Winter Classic. While the NHL hasn’t officially announced it yet, there was a report about a month ago that mentioned that one game will be played at Fenway Park between the Boston Bruins and (possibly) the Washington Capitals; today, there’s talk that another may be held at McMahon Stadium in Calgary betwen the Flames and… ready for this… the Vancouver Canucks.

From CBC.ca:

After two seasons of NHL games played outdoors south of the border, Canada could be getting in on the action for the next Winter Classic.

Calgary, to be exact.

According to sources, the NHL is considering a New Year’s Day doubleheader that would see a second game played at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium on Jan. 1, 2010.

A final decision likely won’t be made until next month.

The NHL’s competition committee, which meets next Thursday in Montreal, needs to provide a green light for the doubleheader to go ahead.

The CBC suggested the doubleheader to the NHL with the second game to take place in Canada after the success of the Winter Classic the last two years.

A game in Calgary would likely see the Flames host another Canadian team which, according to one source, could be the Vancouver Canucks.

Where’s Ty Conkin at?

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that. Although the Canucks aren’t really, well, a “traditional” NHL team.

This is absolutely the lamest idea ever. For starters, if the Canucks are going to be included in a winter classic, why would they waste their LONE OPPORTUNITY on a venue as crappy as McMahon Stadium? Secondly, this game will cease to be special as soon as the league has two of them every year. Thirdly, why do the Canucks want to risk injuring players in -35 Celsius and bad ice? Fourthly, how does this benefit the Canucks? Fifthly, this means another uniform for the Canucks. No thanks. I want to see classic venues and good optics. The Flames vs Canucks in McMahon does not do that for me.
