Free Agency – Mats “I could furnish the penalty box with IKEA” Sundin

2 mil for a Elite player like Sundin? That would certainly make him look for another team. He had a career worst year, but he also brings leadership and if he plays from the start of the season he will be in good physical shape.

I think 3-5 mil is the least you could offer for a player like Sundin.

Leadership doesn’t command salary in this NHL. If it did Trevor Linden would have made 7 million in his final season with the team.

If Sundin wants to play for the Canucks he’s going to have to take a huge paycut.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still not a fan of Sundin, he’s yet to prove himself, but I see his value and could justify having him back on the Canucks next season.

“Sign him for 2 million dollars MAX for one year (preferably less – 1.5).”

    Good luck with that.

As we found out in Toronto, Mats Sundin does not give hometown discounts. He’s not just about the money, but he’ll expect full market value on every deal he signs.

I’d give him up to $4 mil – which is good value for a true second line center.

Gillis is likely to go after a big name scorer as of tomorrow, if Sundin is chewing up 4 mill against the cap he’s not worth it. For someone that’s not likely to make it through the 82 game sked, I wouldnt give him 82 game money.

Gillis is going to need all the cap room he can get to go after someone like Gaborik, or even Cammalleri.

If Sundin want’s to go elsewhere for more money he’ll likely end up on a team that’s not a contender.

Unless Gillis is willing to roll the dice with Wellwood, Kesler or Hodgson as the 2nd line center, I’m not surre the Canucks can get a player to fill that role for $2 million.

Barring major discounts, I think signing Gaborik, Cammalleri or Hossa will be to replace the Sedins as the top line. The 2nd line is a different matter altogether.
