Hockey Sweaters
I caught a fun little conversation on twitter today about hockey sweaters. How many do you have in your closet? What player name on the back? Do you buy just your absolute favourite player or do you buy a bunch? I’m VERY selective with my sweaters. At the moment I have Matty Ohlund. That’s it. He was my first beloved Canuck. I always adored Nazzy and Trev Linden even when I was a casual hockey fan but Matty was the first guy I deemed “sweater worthy”. I probably won’t even contemplate getting a flashy forward’s sweater. I have a position scale. Defencemen are first for positional foxiness with stay at home defencemen slightly ahead of offensive defencemen followed by bruising defensive forwards. It’s taken me until almost November to finally decide that yeah I’ll probably buy Mermaid’s sweater in the stick and rink. (Or maybe Shane baybee. They’re having a hot little duel in my head)
Oh I joke around about having a Canucks harem but they’re like the guy you casually date, ya know? And the guy that you buy the sweater of he’s the guy you commit to date long term. It’s more than a comfortable thing to wear. It’s the logo on the front declaring your endless love and loyalty to your favourite team and the name on the back that says “This is my favourite player above all others. He plays well defensively and knows how to throw a mean left hook. He’s scrappy and plays hard every night and gives me butterflies”. I don’t have a need to own a ton of sweaters. My Ohlund is worn in and comfy. I’ve worn it to sleep in, and to the bar to watch a game. I’ve travelled with it, and cried into the sleeve after a playoff loss. Hockey sweaters bring you closer to fellow fans of your team. Before this year I never wanted to own a sweater that wasn’t a Canucks one. It felt like cheating on my number one loves or something. But I’m going to make an exception for a Wright #43 Tampa Bay because that’s family.
Maybe one day I’ll walk down the aisle in the hockey sweater the Canucks were wearing when they won the Cup. It will be the most beautiful garment you’ve ever seen.
that’s so true – the moment you commit to a player’s name on your back, you’re committed for life. Matty is a great name to have on your back even if he’s no longer with us.
as you know, I’d LOVE to have Dimples on my back but hubby won’t allow it.

You make me look like a jersey whore. I have a Mark Smith jersey, a Steve Bernier jersey, and my current Torrey Mtichell jersey. Unlike Ohlund, my favorites tend to not last on the team for long (released, traded, and for the live of God stop being injured). Then again the only jersey I paid for myself was my Smitty jersey and he’ll always be my first and favorite (the other 2 were presents).
