Which Canucks Defenseman Can Take It To The Next Level?

Matt Lee

Matt Lee has been a Canucks follower and a prototypical Canadian for years; it started on the streets by playing road hockey before and after Vancouver Canucks games and it's brought him here. After graduating from SFU with a BA in Communications and a minor in History while serving as the student newspaper's sports editor for two years, Matt is now a student at BCIT's Broadcast Journalism program in hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster.

Frankly, I think all this talk about lacking a 'top level defenseman' is rubbish, especially when you consider the team has a top level defense. Why do we have to perpetuate these inane cliches? Had this column talked about which guy would control the powerplay or be most reliable on penalty kills then you would have my interest.

First: Gonchar is just a PP d-man. He sucks at defense. So, not elite there.

Also the need to have 30 min. d-men is to cover the screw ups on the bottom pair. If we have a super solid top 6, and we have it, the only thing we need is to send the offensive guys when we need goals, and the defensive when we need to prevent one.

The Pens won without a top tier d-man, so did the Canes and Tampa. It helps if you have one, but you don't need it if your overall lines are responsible.

The need of a top D is a trend, just like 6 yrs ago it was that of a Top goalie.

“But whether it be a lack of killer instinct or grit, Edler hasn’t quite yet reached elite status.”

He's 24… he's still just a baby. I have faith he can step it up big time.
