Cory Schneider is starting tonight’s preseason game against the Flames and is scheduled to play the whole game.
The other Schneider – Mathieu – has finally joined the boys for practice.

Manitoba Moose training camp opens today.
And yes, 42-year old Mike Keane is coming back.

The topic du jour is the Canucks’ depth on defense. With 10 defensemen on one-way contracts, the competition to be one of the top-6 or even top-8 is fierce. And plus, there’s some Cody Hodgson stuff.

Alain Vigneault loves the internal competition.

Here’s some good news for Canucks fans who are anxiously waiting for Cody Hodgson to take part in some preseason action:

Cody Hodgson skated Tuesday for the first time with one of the two “main” groups in a full practice. Until now he had been with the C group that had consisted of injured players (Schneider, Demitra). Hodgson has been cleared for contact and with the team having three games in three nights, heac coach Alain Vigneault says he’ll play in at least one of those games as soon as he says he’s ready.

The puck finally drops for some preseason action tonight as our beloved Vancouver Canucks take on the New York Islanders in Terrace, BC.

Terrace is excited at being named Hockeyville. And so they should be. (I just wish CBC was just as excited.)

If you can believe it, Canucks training camp opens today. The players will report to UBC for their medicals and then make themselves to available to the media.

Kevin Connauton was back on the ice at Clare Drake Arena giving lessons here Wednesday. Except this time he was schooling the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

The Vancouver Canuck prospect who grew up in nearby Spruce Grove and spent last summer working as an instructor at the Golden Bears’ hockey school, scored twice in 38 seconds to launch his team of National Hockey League prospects to its 4-3 win against the University of Alberta.

With prodigy Cody Hodgson and the intriguing Russian Sergei Shirokov grabbing the headier storylines for the forwards in the Vancouver Canucks rookie camp, Dan Gendur of Victoria continues his quieter quest to move up the hockey ladder.

Fellow Victorian Taylor Ellington, meanwhile, has seen the recent flurry of blue-line veterans acquired by the Canucks and must know his fate is to also begin his pro career in the minors.

Having a season in the minors under his belt, with nine goals and 38 points in 52 games with the hometown Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL, Gendur is a year ahead of his buddy Ellington on the pro learning curve.
