Molson Builds the Mother of all Hockey Houses

When the world comes to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Games, Canadians from coast to coast to coast are going to be focusing their unofficial religion, hockey. On that note, Molson Canada has partnered up with the International Ice Hockey Federation to bring the mens and womens hockey teams, their families and fans together in the Molson Canadian Hockey House, which is going to reside the largest ever free standing structure ever built in Canada.

I had the honor of being at the unveiling and press conference of the Molson Canadian Hockey house. There to help kick things off were Stan Smyl, Canucks beloved number 12, and president of Hockey Canada Bob Nicholson, and many others who have been involved in this project since the 2006 Turin Olympics. The unveiling included a virtual fly-through which has me really excited for this venue to finally open – click here to see it.

It’s easy to see why the Molson Canadian Hockey House will be the place to be – and be seen – during the Olympic Games. For starters, it is located only 300 meters away from GM Place and only 500 meters from BC Place – right in the heart of the Games. It will feature a players and families lounge, a meal area seating for 300 people with catering from world renowned chef Wolfgang Puck and his staff. Of course, all drinks will be taken care of by none other than Molson themselves. Imagine having a beer and watching an Olympic hockey game with some of you favorite players.

It will also play host to the largest and best facility to watch Olympic hockey (besides being inside GM Place of course). It is a state of the art venue with 40-foot floor-to-ceiling screens where players and hockey fans can watch live feeds of all hockey games and other Olympic events. There will be live entertainment and fans with passes will get a chance to interact with hockey players and alumni.

This experience comes at a cost – a minimum of $500 per day to be precise – but the experience the Molson Canadian Hockey House promises is priceless. You’ll get to watch the game on screens where the players are practically life-size. And you’ll get to cheer on Team Canada with thousands of fellow hockey fans. If you haven’t been able to get tickets to any hockey games yet, this is going to be the next best thing… and the atmosphere will be just as electric.

I think there’s more to it than just watching the game on a big screen for $500 bucks. It’s a bringing together of the players and the fans, and the area is state of the art in every way. The fan interaction during the game is going to be an experience unlike any other, and it’s also going to be the hockey hub for all fans that aren’t fortunate enough to get into the actual venue.

As much as I would love to partake in that experience, the cost alone would probably kill me – I can’t justify tickets to one Canucks game, let alone that much to experience one day of the Olympics.

I think I’ll just stick to my Canada vs. Switzerland Men’s Hockey game and that will be that.

You would think that anyone who has the bones to pay 5 notes to watch a game on a screen, would have sufficient leverage to get lower bowl seats at the game– where the Players are even MORE life-like!

Hey Richard, great post! Really captured the excitement of the project. You’re dead on – it’s not just a place to watch a hockey game or a simple beer tent. It’s MUCH more than that. Not a stretch to call this a once in a lifetime opportunity for Canadian hockey fans. Plan is to announce some A-List bands in the coming weeks to add to the lineup. Not only the best hockey games, but the best concert and the best party rolled into one. Glad you could make it out to announcement. Look forward to next catch up.

Seems like Molson invited quite a few bloggers to this unveiling and they all swallowed the Molson PR pitch hook, line and sinker. I will be surprised if the organizers convince many fans to spend more money to watch the games on TV than in person. The initial $500/day prices will create some hype and make those receiving comp passes feel special but by February I expect $50-100 will get in you in the tent and it will still be empty on the days when Canada’s men’s team is not playing.
