The Canucks Need a New Goal Song

So I had the pleasure of going to Madison Square Gardens last night to watch the Rangers dismantle the Lightning 8-2. It was fun to watch former Vancouver Giant James Wright, ex Canuck Mattias Ohlund, and in all take in a hockey game that I didnt have to tweet on my phone or laptop. It’s my goal to hit an NHL game in every arena and so far I’ve been fortunate enough to go to 5 different arenas. I’ve been to the home of the Flames, Oilers, Sharks, Rangers, and of course the Canucks.

One thing thing I’ve noticed, and something I miss about the pre-lockout days, is a Canucks goal horn that gets the fans up and singing along. The Canucks current goal song is Green Day and frankly it’s just lame. It only perpetuates the stereo type that Vancouver fans are dull and don’t get into the game and while the fans get up and go crazy for a goal, frankly this “Woo” nonsense doesn’t cut it.

Below is the current Canucks goal song and underneath it is the “Ole” goal song which I remember used to get all the fans into the game no matter what the score of the game was so long as the Canucks had just scored:

The one thing I loved the most about the Rangers game was the goal song. It was catchy, it was fun, and when the whole arena starts singing it you can’t help but get caught up in the electric atmosphere. Don’t get me wrong, Vancouver Fans know how to get excited for a goal, but after watching games at the Shark Tank, and MSG, their fans really get into a goal where as Vancouver fans now sit on their asses “Woo-ing” for half a period.

Even last year’s goal song was more conducive to getting the fans up and singing and into the game:

While we’re at it though, I certainly wouldn’t mind doing a throwback to the Canucks ’94 goal song! I just want to hear a goal song which has the word “Hey” in it multiple times, or something of similar nature that the fans can really get into, you know?

Here’s the Rangers current goal song. I love it and hope that for the fans’ sake the Canucks sometime soon come up with something better and more engaging than the “Woo” that lasts less than 3 seconds and Green Day who just plain suck. Oh, and for the record this Rangers horn is much better than the Blackhawk’s Chelsea Dagger. I promise.

I grew up on that goal song and I also remember being disappointed by the GM Place horn when they moved, mostly because I thought the Pacific Coliseum’s horn/Rock & Roll Part 2 combo was pretty special.

    I can’t say that I completely agree with you on the Rangers’ goal song, but the Canucks do need something different. Last year with the Crowd Chant was all right (despite the similarities to the hated Minnesota Wild). I also thought Bouncing Souls song was good in the early 00s.

    However, since I am such a die hard Canucks fan, my phone’s ringtone seems to often follow what the current goal song is ;) Although, it’s currently the Dexter theme.

    well i think we need a hip song like either BOOM BOOM POW from blackeyed peas or FOR YOU ENTERTAINMENT from adam lambert heehee .. every1 knows the songs in vancouver so why not something every1 knows :)

    The 05/06 horn has much more muscle to it…more force.

    As for the music…to me it’s negligible. The main thing is the blast of the horn.

    The BEST horn was back in the day, when only the Chicago Stadium and the Aud in Buffalo had them…they were both killer horns…with the edge going to the Aud.

    I agree. I feel GM Place doesn’t put on much of a show. I suppose they don’t have to cause it’s already a sellout every night. However what about honking the ferries horn say 3 times and hold the 3rd time if it’s the third goal…. I think it’s St Louis that does this and it’s great!

    Great post. And I agree, this year’s horn is sort of limp like a wet noodle. It’s got no oomph. I am all for going back to something like Olé which was a little better, but it still doesn’t seem to be the perfect Canucks goal song. My brain’s in over drive trying to come up with something that doesn’t suck.

    They’ll never use Gary Glitter’s Rock n’ Roll Pt. 2 again because Gary has been charged and served time for both child pornography and child sexual abuse.

    I believe this is also why the song was dropped from the EA NHL game franchise.

The version you have posted is not exactly correct either. The version the Canucks has a “hey” at certain points of the song. It’s hard to explain unless you are there in the arena to hear it. You can’t hear it while you watch on TV because the announcers are always talking over it.

    I want to know what you don’t like about the goal song? Besides you just thinking it is “lame” and that you don’t like Green Day; what other problems do you have? The crowd is mostly all standing and having a great time after a goal is scored. And remember these are just regular season games…in the playoffs the crowd goes extra crazy for every goal. I’m not sure what you want the crowd to do in every regular season game.

    Somebody had to take the other side :)

    You don’t like the goal song cause it’s Green Day. You obviously don’t like Green Day, so don’t say Holiday sucks because you don’t like the band. Please, shut the fuck up & and don’t say the song sucks because you have personal dislikes towards the band. Fucker. Green Day does not suck.

    I don’t like Green Day, I don’t like the song, but my point also stands that it’s a brutal song to play after a goal. It doesn’t get the crowd into it and it’s straight boring.
