Blown Calls Benefit Gary’s Coyotes

Here was Alex Ponikarovsky’s hit on Dan Hamhuis a few weeks ago.

And here was Alex Burrows’ on Vernon Fiddler tonight.

One hit got a 2-minute minor penalty. The other got a 5-minute major and a game misconduct.

Guess which hit got which penalty.

Earlier this morning, Tony Gallagher (Vancouver Province) wrote about fans’ general mistrust of the NHL. Inconsistent officiating, much like we saw in tonight’s 3-1 loss to the Coyotes, doesn’t help the league’s credibility. Especially when the team that benefited the most from the officiating was the team owned by the league itself.

    I agree to a point, Over the course of a season, I think the calls even out to an extent, or at least they should. Wasn’t there a couple of game stretch where the Coyotes never got a PP opportunity? Can someone confirm?

    Tina, just no. the refs aren’t keeping a tally sheet to make sure it all evens out. that was a ridiculous call and it arguably cost the Canucks the game, or at least a chance to make it a game. The past three games have been decidedly reffed against the Canucks. I guess the refs want to give the other teams a chance to win. I’ll take solace in that thought.

    What about that hit getzlaf did on hamhuis? He actually had a concussion and was out a few weeks. Vern was only out for a few minutes
