Shortly after the Canucks scored and made it 3-0 in the 3rd period against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight, the Blackhawks decided to show how tough and resilient they are. First, Dustin Byfuglien punched Roberto Luongo in the face. A few seconds later, Dave Bolland punched Daniel Sedin while the puck was a good 30 feet away from him.

Yeah, real tough.

Alain Vigneault was pissed off at Chicago coach Joel Queneville and rightfully so. Sending their tough guys going after the Canucks’ best players was a chicken shit move and it’s the kind of “fighting” the league needs to eliminate. (To be fair, I thought the refs did a good job of trying to eliminate it from this game.)

Full credit goes to the Canucks for their response. Kevin Bieksa, Shane O’Brien, Alex Burrows and even Mats Sundin stepped in and stood up for their teammates, and Ryan Kesler eventually scored a powerplay goal to make it 4-0. It was the best response, and in more ways than the final score, the Canucks showed they were the better team.

A couple of comments.

Byfuglien’s punch at Luongo kind of looked like a “reaction” shot. If you look at the video, he’s looking upwards at the puck when he does it. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying.

I haven’t been on your blog too much this year, because Fantasy Hockey has taken over, and that means I’ve been staring more at Fantasy news than Canucks news. But I feel like I liked last year’s layout better. Mostly because, while you have much more info now, you only have one blog posting on the main page at a time. So that I can’t easily scroll down the page to read the postings I might have missed over the week (or two). I know you have the Recent Posts on the right, but again, those are “one read at a time”.

My comment would be to leave fewer podcasts on the main page, have the 2 or 3 most recent posts showing on the main page, remove “Recent Comments”…

Just one man’s opinion.

@ Alanah – Bieksa is a warrior! I’m more than glad that Gillis refused to get rid of him at the trade deadine.

@Kevin – I don’t know about it being a reaction shot. Having watched the replay a few times now, it looked deliberate. I think he knew who and where he was shoving his stick.

I agree with you on the blog layout. (I’ve had a few comments on this already.) I tried fixing it on the template to show the last 5 posts on the main page, but when I do that, it shifts the sidebars to the bottom of the page. When I have a bit more time, it’s definitely something I’m fixing. Thanks for your comment!

I’m not trying to defend Byfuglien in any way. But I would say that given that hockey players are constantly battling other players, trying to gain position, etc., it wouldn’t be all that surprising for it to be a natural reaction to someone in front of you. i.e. he’s looking up at the puck as it flies high, he knows someone’s in front of him, his body reacts with a push, and conceivably he did it out of trained muscle memory – possibly not knowing Luongo’s position relative to his own. That said, he should still refrain from those actions knowing that it’s the goaltender in front of him.

Gotta love Bieksa and Burrows, they are leading this team, and it is a TEAM. These types of events just prove it to the whole league. Eager is a legit heavyweight, and Bieska more than held his own in that scrap, Eager took the easy way out and decided to wrestle.

Ryp is back too! This team is built for the playoffs, Raymond and Wellwood can alternate as the 12th forward.

Things like this will happen in hockey. Any sport that allows fighting, things are bound to get out of control. That’s why they wear all that protective equipment.
