Unless I’m reading the NHL standings wrong, it looks like the following are the remaining, possible playoff scenarios for our Vancouver Canucks as the Western Conference schedule concludes tonight:

  • If the Blues win, the Canucks will play the loser of the Kings and Sharks game.
  • If the Blues lose AND the Kings win, the Canucks will play the Sharks.
  • If the Blues lose in regulation AND the Sharks win in regulation, the Canucks will play the Kings.
  • If the Blues lose in regulation AND the Sharks win in OT or the shootout, the Canucks will play the Blues.
  • If the Blues lose in OT or the shootout AND the Sharks win in regulation, the Canucks will play the Kings.
  • If the Blues lose in OT or the shootout AND the Sharks win in OT or the shootout, the Canucks will play the Kings.

Not exactly sure what happened between Monday and last night, but maybe the switch was flipped – just off? Or was it connected to the SkyTrain, because boy were there issues. Regardless, this tweet sums up the game nicely:

At least we have TGATT to make things better!

Carolina Hurricanes

Rudy Staal

Jared Staal is set to make his NHL debut for the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. The Canes, whose Captain is Eric Staal and who acquired Jordan Staal from the Pens last summer, are playing the New York Rangers. Marc Staal plays for NYR. So much Staal! Unfortunately, Marc Staal is injured and will not play. Although Eric Staal joked to media that maybe Marc would take the warm-up so they could all skate around together. Don’t toy with my emotions, Eric.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I am a Staal fanatic. They are my favorite players in the NHL. As excited as I am to see the youngest Staal make the NHL, I can’t help but think it’s not actually a  debut so much as a swan-song. Jared Staal is 22 and he peaked before his NHL draft. He has struggled so much on the Charlotte Checkers, his first year he spent some time in the ECHL  and then spent most of last year as a healthy scratch. Although he’s done better this year he was only brought up because the Canes thought it made more sense to send Riley Nash down to help the Checkers in the AHL playoffs. Also, Jared’s in the third year of his AHL contract and there are serious doubts it will be renewed. So is this his Rudy moment? I think it might me, sadly.

Duncan “Sexist” Keith: Is he jealous of Sedin’s Choppers?

Was it sexist to tell Karen Thomson, the female sports reporter, that ‘she probably can’t play either.’ Yes. Why? Because he wouldn’t have said it to a male reporter. End of story. Then Duncan later told reporters that “I respect everybody. I respect everybody’s job,” …except, well, you didn’t, Dunc. Can someone just teach this self-proclaimed sore loser how to say I’m sorry? What’s more sexist than Keith’s infantile attack on the female reporter, in my opinion, is the males on twitter who declare it’s not sexism. You can’t make that call, boys because you are BOYS. It’s like me telling a gay person what they can find homophobic. I can’t. One guy even snarkily told me that I should just let it go and blamed political correctness for people’s anger at the comment. Guess what? The only thing more sexist than assuming a girl can’t play hockey is a guy blaming political correctness and telling a woman to get over it.

But let’s get back to the real issue here – Keith’s inability to control his anger towards Daniel Sedin. This time he kept his elbows down but took a two-handed whack at Daniel’s back with his stick after Sedin scored. What’s causing Duncan to act like a trantruming toddler every time he plays Daniel Sedin? Is he frustrated that Sedin’s raw talent clearly outweighs his own and that Sedin can score goals without needing to injure people first? Or is he angry at that Sedin managed to get all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals and didn’t lose one tooth, where Duncan had to lose seven? Hmm…

Bryzgalov: Journalism For Dummies

Ilya Brygalov’s quirky personality has become a problem for him. I saw it coming. Sure, it’s all fun and games when he’s talking about tigers and the universe, but the media has crossed Bryz’s proverbial line and he’s not happy about it. Recently a rumor surfaced, and the media ran with it, that Brygalov was benched for a game because he fell asleep in a team meeting. Sounds hysterical, but not to Bryz. He chastised the media, called the claim ridiculous, said they needed better sources and told them they needed to do their job better. Bryz needs to understand he created this monster. He’s never once tried to be anything other than outrageous since being traded to the Flyers. His erratic performance and high salary already make him a target, add to that his outrageous personality, and you can’t blame the media for believing he’d catch some Zzzs

Listen to the following exchange between Chicago Blackhawks defenseman, Duncan Keith, and TEAM 1040 reporter, Karen Thomson: audio link to TEAM 1040

Karen Thomson: Well, there was something there it looked like maybe it was a penalty.

Duncan Keith: Oh no, I don’t think there was anything. I think he scored a nice goal. The ref was right there. That’s what the ref saw. We should get you as a ref maybe, eh? First female referee.

KT: Yeah, maybe. I can’t skate though.

DK: Can’t play probably either, right? But you’re thinking the game like you know it. Okay, see ya.

I know Keith was pissed off. I would be too if my team got beat in a big game and if I was on the ice and the Sedins burned me on a couple of goals.

For context, here’s the play in question:

Maybe it’s not enough to swing his stick like a baseball bat at Daniel, but what a jerk way to respond to a reporter.

Was Keith being sexist in his remarks? Was he being a dick? You be the judge.

It’s like the Canucks flipped the proverbial switch last night. I mean, after all their 40-minute efforts and 10-minute wins, they played perhaps their most complete game of the season and beat the rival Chicago Blackhawks by a 3-1 score.

It was an eventful night, with the Sedins producing their usual share of Sedinery, the newly-formed Higgins-Roy-Kesler line showing some chemistry, and even Max Lapierre played his most annoying game of the season (in a good way).

20-year old Frankie Corrado also made his NHL debut. After spending most of the year in the OHL and suiting up for not even a handful of games with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, Corrado logged 17:20 of unsheltered minutes last night and looked anything but a raw rookie playing in his first-ever NHL game.

Not bad, kid. Not bad.

Just seconds prior to the faceoff of last night’s highly-anticipated game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks, Hawks defenceman Brent Seabrook took a whiff of some smelling salts and provided us with this expression on his face:

I was half-amused and half-horrified.  Then, I took to Twitter and asked you to provide some creative captions.  Here’s a sampling of your replies, unmodified, unedited, and unabridged:

The word “rivalry” has been overused so much in the NHL. Just because you’re playing on an NBC “Rivalry Wednesday” broadcast, it doesn’t mean you have a rivalry.

The Canucks and Blackhawks are the epitome of a true rivalry. They have a recent history of having some heated playoff battles. They hit each other, legally and illegally. They hate each other. The fanbases hate each other. Even Chicago’s professional media throw all journalistic integrity and professionalism out the door when these two teams meet.

And as much as Patrick Kane denies it, tonight’s game shouldn’t be any different.

After all, there are still seedings and regular season titles at stake. The Blackhawks are on an historic run, not having lost a game in regulation in a zillion days (okay that might be an exaggeration, but they are 9-0-2 in their last 11 games), and is a win away from clinching the Presidents’ Trophy. Meanwhile, 44 games into a 48-game season, the Canucks are still trying to find their way, though they’re somehow 1 point in 3 games away from winning their 5th straight Northwest Division title anyway.

20-year old Frankie Corrado will make his NHL debut tonight – on a top-4 pairing with Alex Edler, no less – in place of the injured Keith Ballard. What better way to get acquainted to the NHL than playing your first ever NHL game against a heated rival and the best team in the league, eh?

After missing 5 games, Chris Higgins will also make his return to the lineup. He practiced on a line with Derek Roy and Ryan Kesler this morning so here’s hoping his return somehow gets the Canucks offense going (again).

Canucks Record

25-13-7, 57 points (1st in the Northwest Division, 3rd in the Western Conference)

Season Series

This will be the 3rd and final meeting between these two teams this regular season. They split the first 2 meetings; both previous games went to a shootout.

Who’s Hot

Jonathan Toews has had a Hart Trophy caliber season and many believe he deserves to be in the running. He has 14 points (5G-9A) in his last 11 games. He’s also tied with Kane for the team lead in goals (21) and is second on the team in scoring with 46 points.

Overall, he’s 5th in the NHL in goals, 10th in points, and 3rd in plus/minus with an impressive plus-27 rating.

What’s Not

After a stretch of scoring 23 goals in 6 games earlier this month, the Canucks offense has hit a bit of a rough patch. In their last 3 games, they’ve been outshot 108-66 and have just 3 goals in that span. If Henrik Sedin thought last Saturday’s game against the Wings, in which the Wings carried much of the play and outshot the Canucks by a 34-14 margin, was “one of our best games in a few weeks”, then they have a way to go yet to be able to truly contend when the real season begins next week.

Apr 212013

Cory Schneider played great. So did Alex Burrows, who kept the Wings on their heels all night, and Max Lapierre, who chanelled his inner Patrick Kane in the shootout, and scored the shootout winner. With their 2-1 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings last night, the Canucks clinched their spot in the 2013 NHL playoffs.

But who cares about all that? DJ Tanner and Aunt Becky were at the game.

Have mercy!
