Who wants to win some Canucks tickets? Well, lets play a game, shall we?

Rules are simple, you solve the puzzle, you have a shot at the Canucks tickets. Feel like testing some of your Canucks knowledge? It isn’t going to be easy! Have at’er and let me know what you come up with!

Ready?

Step 1: Lets crunch some numbers.

Quick example of how this is going to work – If I gave you the clue: “You take Mario Bliznak, and take away Dan Hamhuis. Next, throw in Rob Davison.” Then your answer would be 604. Mario Bliznak (62) take away Hamhuis (2) is equal to 60. The answers to each of the clues in the following bullets is a number. Do you follow?

First, lets play with some jersey numbers, shall we?:

  • Divide Alex Burrows in two.
  • What number did Gary Lupul, Dan Quinn and Barry Pederson have in common?
  • Imagine Trevor Linden being half the man he is.
  • Throw in that cheeky best-shootout-goal-ever goal scorer, Marek Malik.
  • Divide Cam Neely into three.
  • Then add together Charlie Hodge, Keith Carney and Pat Quinn.
  • John Arbour and John Schella shared more than a first name.
  • Anyone remember Fred Speck?
  • Oh, and lastly, a current player in the San Jose Sharks organization has a dad that played for the Canucks – what was daddy’s number? (The one he shared with another ex-Canuck, fondly called by some as the “Finnish MacInnis”.)

Step 2: How’s your math?

Write down the numbers in the order you got them. If you’ve figured it out, you might be looking at a phone number. Before you do anything with it, add these ten numbers up.

The number you get should be one of the jersey numbers a former San Jose Shark and former Sedin linemate wore just before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks.

Who was this player?

Step 3: Text us your answer.

Remember that code you cracked, Mr/Mrs. Da Vinci Code?

Text your answer (from step 2) to that phone number (from step 1) by 3:00 PM today – make sure you include your name or Twitter handle so we know who you are – and you could two lower bowl tickets to tonight’s Game 2 playoff matchup between the Canucks and the San Jose Sharks.

It’s that simple.

Is there a more exciting time of year here in beautiful BC than during the Canucks playoffs?

The Canucks are trying to capture your excitement with a microsite – thisiswhatwelivefor.com – where fans can submit photos, videos and other media using Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and use the hashtag #TIWWLF, and then view them in the mosaic on the site.

On the ice, the Canucks will try once again to chase Lord Stanley’s Cup. For those whose disappointing early exit against the Kings are still fresh on their minds, it’s a fresh start and another opportunity to give Canucks fans that elusive Stanley Cup.

Of course, for that to happen, someone has to step up and lead and will this team. Well, everyone has to step up, but someone has to step up higher than everyone else.

Have you ever wanted to skate alongside one of your hockey heroes? Well, now you have a chance to do just that.

On BC Family Day, Monday, February 11, 2013, Sun Life Financial is sponsoring “Skate with the Canucks“, a chance for fans to take the ice at Rogers Arena with some current Canucks players and Canucks alumni. Thanks to our friends from the Vancouver Canucks, one CHB reader and a guest can join them.

You can enter in two, very easy ways:

If there was one thing clear about the Canucks early exit from the post-season, the lack of secondary scoring and production from the second line was a large issue. So it’s definitely worrisome that Ryan Kesler is still on the mend (with no schedule to return yet) from off-season surgery AND David Booth has encountered a temperamental groin, leaving him on the shelf for four to six weeks.

So how do you replace two-thirds of your second line for close to a third of the shortened NHL season? This is where you come in.

Last season’s run to the Stanley Cup Final outlined a number of different players who’s performance dictated the success of the team. Alex Burrows against the Blackhawks. Ryan Kesler against the Predators. Or Kevin Bieksa against the Sharks. We could even say that Luongo’s performance against the Bruins was a difference maker as he shut out the Bruins twice in the Stanley Cup Finals. We discover every playoff series that a player stands out from the rest.

So as we watch the puck drop today in the Western Conference Quarterfinal, who will it be this go-round?

In a series where the first goal may dictate the games winner, my money is on the play of Roberto Luongo. While the Kings were ranked 29th in goals for over the season, they were ranked 2nd in goals against – and we’ve all seen that the Canucks have been more focused on the process than they were on offense. And when you mix a little Vigneault with a little Sutter, you’ve got yourself the recipe for a war of attrition.

Contest: The Cody Hodgson Era Has Ended… and CHB Needs a New Tagline

Wow. It’s still hard to believe that the Canucks have traded away Richard Loat’s favourite player, Cody Hodgson.

And like much of the intertwined web of social media, we here at Canucks Hockey Blog have also seen ourselves transition through the five stages of grief over the deal:

  • Shock – What do you mean he was traded?
  • Denial – Liars! Until Bob McKenzie says so, Cody is still a Canuck!
  • Anger – Damn that Bob McKenzie for saying Cody is a Sabre.
  • Depression – Cody was the next Linden.
  • Acceptance – Well, he’s gone. Guess we have to change our blog’s tag line.

That’s right. Canucks Hockey Blog needs a new tag line and while my early suggestion of changing it to “the cody hodgson era begins ended” was vetoed by those with a heart, we all agreed that we would reach out to our faithful readers to come up with our next one.

Here’s how you tell us:

This year’s Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will be live from Prince Edward Island on Saturday, February 11, 2012. With the return of the Winnipeg Jets, SHDiC will feature no less than 4 NHL games involving all 7 Canadian NHL teams:

  • 11:00 AM – Edmonton Oilers at Ottawa Senators
  • 11:00 AM – Winnipeg Jets at Pittsburgh Penguins
  • 4:00 PM – Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs
  • 7:00 PM – Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames

Canucks Trivia Hunt: Decode and Go to the Game

Okay kids, after a couple of days off, the Canucks are back in action against the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow night. That seems like a good enough reason to have a little bit of fun and include the Canucks in it all.

This is what I’m proposing: I’ve got two tickets to the game. One’s for me, and the other is for you. Now, I’m open to taking anyone to the game, but you’re going to have to work for it a little bit.

Here are your instructions:

  1. The following players are arranged in a particular order: Sid Veysey, Robb Gordon, Wayne Connelly, Moe Lemay, Ab Demarco, Alexei Tezikov, Sheldon Kannegiesser, Robert Nordmark, Lars Zetterstrom, John Schella. Figure out their jersey numbers and you’ll find yourself looking at a phone number.
  2. Once you decode the phone number, break out your calculator. Add the player numbers up and you get a new player number.
  3. It doesn’t stop there. The new player number you’ve come up with has only been worn by one player in Canucks history. He’s a player with a tie to tonight’s game. Lets call him “Player X”.
  4. Here’s the question: “Who is Player X?”
  5. Text your answer and Twitter handle to the phone number you decoded in step 1 before 12:00 noon on Tuesday, November 29.
  6. Also, make sure you follow @mozy19 on Twitter – I’ll DM the winner (so if you don’t follow me, you can’t be contacted as the winner).

Everyone who enters will be thrown into a random draw for that extra ticket and the winner will be announced and contacted after lunch.

I went to the Moneyball premiere last night – good movie by the way – and it got me thinking about stats and player valuation and what it must be like to be a GM of a professional sports team.

Which in turn got me thinking about hockey pools, and more specifically, the CHB Hockey pool.

In previous years, we’ve done head-to-head pools on Yahoo, but that was limited basically to about 10-12 hardcore poolies who signed up every year.

This season, we thought we’d open things up for more people and try something different.

The Format

You pick 30 players, including any 26 skaters (any combination of forwards and defensemen) and 4 goaltenders. There’s no lottery, no draft, no trades. No experience is necessary – you just straight up pick the players you like and follow along during the season.

The Scoring System

For skaters, you’ll earn the following points:

  • 1 point for every goal
  • 1 point for every assist
  • 0.5 points for every powerplay goal or assist
  • 0.5 points for every shorthanded goal or assist
  • 0.5 points for every game-winning goal in regulation and OT
  • 0.5 points for every game-winning goal in the shootout

Ex. If Daniel Sedin scores a powerplay goal, he earns 1.5 points (1 point for the goal and 0.5 points for him scoring it on the powerplay). If this powerplay goal ends up being the game-winner, he’ll earn a total of 2 points (1 point for the goal, 0.5 points for him scoring it on the powerplay and 0.5 points for it being the game-winning goal).

For goaltenders, you’ll earn the following points:

  • 2 points for every win (in regulation, OT or shootout)
  • 2 points for every shutout

Ex. If Roberto Luongo backstops the Canucks to a 2-1 win, he earns 2 points for the win. If Luongo backstops the Canucks to a 2-0 shutout win, he earns 4 points (2 points for the win and 2 points for the shutout). Note that the NHL doesn’t give credit for a shutout if it’s shared by both goaltenders (i.e. both goaltenders appeared in that particular game).

The Entry

To enter, you can either:

  1. Post your 30 players on the comments section below. (Make sure you sign in before you post so we have your name and contact information in case you win.)
  2. Alternatively, you can email me your list of 30 players at gocanucksgo10@hotmail.com.

Remember that you need to include 26 skaters and 4 goaltenders. We won’t accept any entries that don’t meet this criteria.

The deadline to send in your entry is 11:59 PM on Tuesday, October 4th.

There is no entry fee, but please, only one entry per person.

The Standings

To check your stats, go to pickuphockey.com and use the pool name “CHBPOOL2012″ and password “believeinlou”.

All teams will be entered by Sunday, October 9th. (All stats will be retroactive to the start of the regular season on October 6th.) Make sure you check your entries.

The Prize

The team with the most points at the end of the regular season wins.

The winner will receive a Reebok Canucks Premier Jersey (retail $139 plus tax) like this one here.

If there is a tie, the following tie-breakers will apply in the following order:

  1. Most number of goals
  2. Most number of goaltender wins
  3. Most number of shutouts
  4. Most number of powerplay goals
  5. Most number of game-winning goals in regulation and OT
  6. Most number of game-winning goals in the shootout
  7. Most number of shorthanded goals

If teams are still tied after these tie-breakers, these teams will split $150 in Canucks Team Store gift cards.
