The search for Scott Arniel’s replacement as head coach of the Manitoba Moose appears close to being concluded. From Ben Kuzma (Vancouver Province):

Claude Noel could succeed Scott Arniel as head coach of the Manitoba Moose, The Province has learned.

The Vancouver Canucks have interviewed Noel to fill their AHL affiliate vacancy after the interim Columbus Blue Jackets bench boss was replaced by Arniel on June 8. Noel has a year left on his contract, but has an out-clause if he joins another organization.

“He’s a very well thought of guy in the industry, has a terrific record and takes a great deal of pride in the teaching component and preparation component to get [players] into the NHL,” said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, who will interview other candidates and could reach a final decision within a week.

I’m trying to think if there’s ever been another instance when one organization’s minor-league head coach switched positions with another organization’s head coach (albeit Noel was only Columbus’ head coach on an interim basis), but am drawing a blank. Interesting swap anyway if Noel does indeed come on board.

According to Aaron Portzline (Columbus Dispatch), the Columbus Blue Jackets have hired Manitoba Moose coach Scott Arniel as their new head coach.

After a two-month search that included one public rejection, the Blue Jackets have hired Scott Arniel to be their coach, The Dispatch has learned via multiple NHL sources.

Arniel, who has coached the AHL’s Manitoba Moose the last four seasons, will be introduced at a news conference at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Neither Arniel nor Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson would comment when contacted by The Dispatch.

Arniel is the third straight Moose head coach to make the move to the NHL. The others, of course, are Randy Carlyle (Anaheim) and Alain Vigneault (Vancouver).

I’m going to make this short and sweet because this is it! As a fan every time I have seen Nycholat this year he has given up more goals than I can shake a goal stick at! To me losing him to the Canucks is better for the Moose as seen in the last game with a victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs. Having said that, let’s move on to tonight’s game 6 of the AHL Calder Cup playoffs…

In a nutshell here is how I see it:

Moose must play not the first 40 minutes but more important than anything, the last 10 minutes. This Bulldogs team loves the comeback. They are not only a strong team but a very potent team when they are down. If the Moose have a 2 goal lead, which is always the worst lead in hockey, then they better go for 3 and not sit back. Cory Schneider is a strong goalie but he cannot score goals. The Moose have done this before and they can do it again. Beat the DOGS!

Other factors that come to mind even though he was not picked as a star (still confused over that one), Desbiens who is a rock for this team has to keep his run and gun pace. In the stands we thought he was done for sure last game after crashing into the boards but came back to throw 2 more pucks into the net for the Moose victory. He is 200% heart!

Schroeder, Keane and Sexton all come off a 2 point night heading into game 5 and are starting to become the go-to-guys for the series.

The last thing I see from my vantage point is a weak Cedric Desjardins when it comes to the short side glove. 5 goals have come from that angle and when he lets a bad one in, he seems to let the next one in just as easy. Traffic as always will help keep him from seeing the puck and a must in tonight’s game 6! Good luck to the Manitoba Moose tonight!

That’s your quickie from the crease for now!

Until next time www.twitter.com/winnipegmac is where you can get the updates on the score!

Bit by the Dog!

There are games that you play in hockey that no matter what you do right the outcome doesn’t fall your way. That’s what happened last night for the Manitoba Moose in Game 1 vs the Hamilton Bulldogs. Cedric Desjardins decided that he would like a shutout for his first ever Calder Cup playoff game and he did just that in a 2-0 victory last night, stopping all 21 shots the Moose threw at him.

The Moose did pretty much what they needed to do against the powerful Bulldogs, including keeping them to 18 shots which is a great key to keeping those Dogs to a minimum of scoring opportunities. Second thing was a perfect 7-out-of-7 on the PK. They had some solid goaltending from Cory Schneider and the defense did a pretty good job keeping the Hamilton top line off the score sheet. A sneaky one-timer beat Schneider late in the third to seal the deal for the Bulldogs but it is only game one. As always in any playoff picture it comes down to goaltending and in order for the Manitoba Moose to get past this first round they will have to get in front and  ”entertain” Cedric  little more than game one. If ya can’t see it, ya ain’t gonna stop it!

That’s your quickie from the crease for now. Until next time…

That’s pretty much the story of tonight’s game between the Manitoba Moose and the the Peoria Rivermen.

With a 3-2 victory tonight, the Moose grab 2 valuable points in the playoff picture. Actually it was Cory Schneider who swiped the the 2 points for Manitoba. Yan Stastny started it off in the first period throwing a puck short side shelf on the Peoria goaltender followed by a lucky break when Jordan Schoeder banked a shot off the D man Nate Guenin to give the Moose a 2-zip lead. The Rivermen paddled back for 2 goals but Mario Bliznak was able to poke one last hole in the boat boys hopes thanks to our Captain Mike Keane and his always never give up efforts to get the puck out to Bliznak.

After that the goaltending of Cory Schneider took over. The second period ended with Peoria leading the shot count 26-18; the Rivermen then peppered another 18 on Schneider in the third period and ended the game with a crazy 44-23 shot advantage. In the final minutes of the game, Schneider threw out the left leg off a lightning faceoff shot, and with 1:56 left, his cobra-like glove shot up and all but took the wind from the Rivermen sails.

Game two goes tomorrow night here in the ‘Peg where the Moose look to take 4 points from the weekend! That’s your quickie from the crease from Winnipeg.

Until next time….

So here it is in a nutshell … As it stands now the Manitoba Moose will either play the Rochester Americans or the Hamilton Bulldogs depending on this weekend. If the Moose finish in third place – which is still possible – the Moose will play the second place Americans.

This weekend, we see the Peoria Rivermen, looking for a little revenge from earlier this year where the Moose lost both games of a two-game battle. Historically, the Moose have a pretty good home record against the St. Louis Blues affiliate; and two wins over them will help them pick up points and catch up to the Abbotsford Heat.

The Moose will continue to look to Marco Rosa and Sergei Shirokov for offense, and to Cory Schneider to add to his team record-breaking season. (Cory Schneider’s 33 wins is a franchise record, breaking his 28 wins from last season.) Hopefully Schneider shows some more great goaltending this weekend and in the second season no matter who the Moose take on in the first round!

One thing we’re looking forward to is the return of Cody Hodgson after his junior season in Brampton ended earlier this week. Would be nice to see him along side Jordan Schroeder who has given fans something to look forward to in such a short period of time. That’s your quickie from the crease for today!

Until next time, Go GREEN!

Yes I said MANITOBA! All of you Canucks fans who are wondering where all the new players are coming from that’s the place. The Manitoba Moose who are based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. For all of those people who have no idea where that is you should have paid more attention in school! Head west east from GM Place, and 5 hours after Saskatchewan, you will stop at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg where the Vancouver Canucks’ farm team plays.

I have heard that there are a few people who would like to know more of what’s going on in the AHL with the new Abbotsford Heat franchise popping up so why not follow your FARM TEAM? I shall try to keep you posted as best as possible thru the second season this year when it comes to the MOOSE.

As it stands right now, the Moose are sitting in 4th place in the AHL North Division and would be playing the 1st place Hamilton Bulldogs in the first round of the Calder Cup Championship. Why should that be of interest? How about that a former Canucks goalie is in the way of Manitoba moving on – Curtis Sanford. Once cheered, Sanford is now the enemy and is the wall who loves to face us. We too have our own wall in the nets who has appeared a few times with the green, white and blue – #35 Cory Schneider, who sits with a .917 Save Percentage going into the quest for the Calder Cup. Cory carried the Moose all the way to the finals last year only to lose out to the powerful Hershey Bears. If the Moose are going to move on, Schneider will have to be LARGE between the pipes for Manitoba.

Until next time…

Jan 132010

Last night I had the chance to watch the Moose play as they came to town to take on the Calgary Flames affiliate the Abbotsford Heat. One thing I was looking forward to seeing was Sergei Shirokov play. I was all over the kid in the pre-season, and foolish enough to think he was ready to play on the Canucks roster this season. Brian from Canucks Corner put me in my place, but after watching Shirokov play last night things make a little more sense.

I like many others was wondering why players like Desbiens and Grabner were being called up over players like Shirokov but after watching the Moscow talent play last night there are certain facets of his game that need addressing before he’s ready for the NHL. I think the biggest concern at the moment is Shirokov has no defensive responsibility. His back check doesn’t exist and almost every shift he was on the ice, if the Moose had possession he was wandering off by the Heat’s blue line waiting for the stretch pass or a chance to cherry pick. The difference was when you saw the way Grabner approach the play he not only backchecked but he wasn’t wandering waiting for that breakaway chance rendering himself completely ineffective otherwise.

That’s the only major issue I saw with Shirokov last night but one that made sense. For a small guy he’s going to have to fight to make this league, but he’s strong on the puck, he can skate and he’s got a wicked shot. Several times his shot handcuffed the Heat goaltender unfortunately though neither resulted in a goal. Shirokov was in on two of the goals though picking up two assists on the night and assisting on Nycholat’s game winning goal in overtime after the Moose clawed back from down 2-0 at the end of the first to win 4-3 in OT.

It’s clear Shirokov’s still learning the North American game and he’s got a little way to go. Next year depending how the free agent market pans out there’s a good chance we might see him in the lineup. That said, the best place for the 23 year old Russian is the Moose and it’s great that he’s leading the team offensively and showing he can put up points. That’s the best way to show he can show he’s ready to head up to the big leagues. Through 39 games played with the Moose he leads all Moose regulars in goals, points, shooting percentage, and plus/minus and is 2nd in shots power play goals and short handed goals. He’s proving he can lead that team offensively and with that will come his development and understanding of the game.

May 292009

The Canucks season may be over, but the Canucks affiliate the Manitoba Moose are ripping up the post season in the AHL which has those Canucks fans still around, excited about a few things.

There’s been one thing the Canucks have had problems over the last few seasons. Scoring. Scoring comes from shooting. Some of the most promising Canucks prospects, Hodgson, Grabner, and my personal favourite, Bolduc have just been racking up shots in the playoffs. One of the most telling stat of the Mooose’s playoff success thus far has been their shot dominance. Grabner has a whopping 68 shots 14 playoff games so far. Hodgson has 22 shots in 6 games and Bolduc has 26 shots in 10 games. Second leading shot getting is Jason Jaffray with 60 shots in 16 games.

Aside from shots, what’s impressed me is how Hodgson has fit in. He’s made is pro debut in the middle of the Moose’s run and in 6 games he has 3 points, 1 goal and 2 assists and as mentioned, 22 shots. He’s already showing that he’s closer and closer to being ready for the jump to the NHL as he’s fitting very nicely in with the Moose. In his 6 games he’s also a +2.

One guy that’s impressed me on the back end (which could be important if Ohlund goes and we don’t fill that void with a top 4 defenseman) is Shaun Heshka. He’s got 20 shots on goal, 3 assists, and is tied for the team lead in +/- with +10. Looks like he’s the Willie Mitchell of the Mooose, and had the Canucks not had so much depth on defense at the start of last season, I think he would have made the lineup. He’s developed into a very solid defenseman. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of the legitimate contenders for the blue line next season.

The Baby Canucks top players have also been producing on the score sheet. Grabner is averaging just under a point per game. What’s impressed me most is the play of Bolduc. He’s played 6 games less than most of the other players, and yet he’s also averaging a point per game. He’s making his time on the ice count. Krog leads the team in points with 18 points in 16 games, Jaffray is second on the scoring list and Grabner sits 3rd.

The fact that all these kids are playing so well only adds to the Canucks depth charts. Say we do lose Wellwood to Free Agency, bringing up one of the young guns from the minors wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Hodgson is making his bid for the big team next year, he just has to keep consistent. I think next year Bolduc is going to get his break. If Pyatt is gone (and I hope Gillis doesn’t re-sign him) that would be a nice spot for Alexandre “Bold Duck” Bolduc to slot in. Either way, Moose are in the Calder Cup Finals, and there’s nothing more important that that team can take away from all this, than learning how to win. If they can learn how to win at a minor level, thats one step closer to learning how to win in the NHL.
