2011 NHL Entry Draft: Canucks Select Nicklas Jensen in First Round

2011 NHL Entry Draft: Canucks Select Nicklas Jensen in First Round

I’ll be honest. I didn’t think Nicklas Jensen would last to the no. 29 pick. I didn’t even consider it. Going into the draft, Jensen was ranked 21st by NHL Central Skating, 22nd by International Scouting services, 24th by TSN and 19th by The Hockey News. Already 6’2″ and 188 lbs., he’s a power forward-type with good hands and good skill. He’s known as a smart hockey player too, which I’m sure GM Mike Gillis liked. Jensen, who plays for the Oshawa Generals, just finished a fairly productive first season in the OHL. He recorded 29 goals and 58 points...

Random Musings

Random Musings

Some random Friday musings as we eagerly await the NHL Entry Draft: There’s a lot of chatter leading into tonight’s NHL Entry Draft. The Canucks are said to be entertaining offers for their first-round pick (29th overall) and goaltender Cory Schneider to either move up the draft or to acquire a player that can help them win now. If they keep their pick, the Canucks have shown interest in top-ranked goaltender, John Gibson, and Vancouver Giants defenseman, David Musil. There were rumors yesterday linking the Peter Stastny to the Canucks. Here’s the thing: Stastny has a $6.6 million cap hit....

2nd Five Hole for Food Tour Kicks Off Today

2nd Five Hole for Food Tour Kicks Off Today

When Richard Loat and the Five Hole for Food crew landed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the first things they did were to visit Cape Spear, the very eastern-most point in North America, dip a hockey stick in the Atlantic Ocean, and then get screeched in. With these symbolic acts, the second Five Hole for Food tour kicked off. Last year’s inaugural tour was a great success – FHFF, a series of street hockey games played in various cities across the country to raise food and food bank awareness for the local food banks, raised 6,000 lbs. of food in 2010 –...

The Sedins: Great Players, Even Better People

The Sedins: Great Players, Even Better People

For anyone still questioning the Sedins, I recommend you read Ed Willes’ piece (Vancouver Province). Daniel, of course, has already won the Art Ross Trophy for leading the NHL in scoring in the regular season. But also: But the Hart isn’t the only hardware Sedin is up for today. He and his twin brother – and what does it say about the Sedins that they’re listed as an entry- are up for something called the NHL Foundation Player of the Year Award. Now, the Foundation Award is not one of the most coveted trophies in the NHL. Truth be told,...

The Better Team Won and Other Thoughts

The Better Team Won and Other Thoughts

As we recover from the thrills and spills from the last 9 months, we’re going to slowly start dissecting the 2010/2011 Canucks and their long season and deep playoff run. For starters, here are some quick thoughts. Not to take anything away from what the Canucks did this season, but I think we’re all rational enough to admit that the Boston Bruins were the better team over the course of the 7 games of the Stanley Cup Finals. It’s easy for some people to look at the number of goals Roberto Luongo allowed in their 4 losses – that number...

Canucks TV: Thank You Video

Canucks TV: Thank You Video

Set to U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name”, here is the Vancouver Canucks’ thank you video to fans:

Win it… for all of us

Win it… for all of us

When the puck drops for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight, the Canucks will be in a position they’ve been in just one other time in their 40-year history. Win the game, win the Stanley Cup. A couple of days ago, Ed posted some nice sentiments about this Cup Run, and he’s right in that, win or lose, the 2010/2011 season has given us some great memories already. But I’d like to take it one step further – I want them to win the whole damn thing. I want them to win it for the long-time fans, who’ve...

Boychuk Hits Raymond Late; Raymond Out 3-4 Months

Boychuk Hits Raymond Late; Raymond Out 3-4 Months

First, our thoughts are with Mason Raymond and his family as he suffered a suspected fractured vertebrae on a hit from Johnny Boychuk and may be sidelined for four-to-six months. Here’s the video of the hit: For now, I’ll ignore the chants of “Diver” from the ever-so-classy Boston fans as Raymond lies down obviously hurt and being attended to on the ice – their douchebaginess speak for themselves. But pay attention to when Boychuk hits Raymond. The puck is nowhere near him; Kesler had it and even had time to make a play. It was a late hit – almost...

Pre-SCF Game 6 Quick Hits

Pre-SCF Game 6 Quick Hits

Only a few more hours until gametime; here are some quick thoughts. Because there are a few in the mainstream media who refuse to play Roberto Luongo’s full quote on Tim Thomas right after the Canucks’ game 5 victory, I’ve embedded the video for you to see. At the 2:22 mark, a reporter asked Luongo, “Roberto, could you just talk about the goal, and from a goalie’s perspective, how difficult it is to play a shot off the end boards when it comes from a weird angle so it goes off Tim’s body… just how hard it is?” Luongo’s full...

Visa Hockey Love Hurts Giveaway

Visa Hockey Love Hurts Giveaway

You’ll remember a few months ago, we ran a contest with Visa’s Hockey Love Hurts program. As part of that contest, you guys had a chance to ask Alex Burrows some questions and Burr responded to them. Well, the Hockey Love Hurts program is over, and as it turns out, the winner was from Vancouver, a Canucks fan who got to watch game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Rogers Arena. As a thank you to CHB for helping with the program, Visa has kindly given us two (2) $75 Visa gift cards to give out to our loyal...
