Best & Worst of Round 1 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs

There were good times and bad times – and then there were devastating times. If you’re a fan of the the Sens, Wings, Isles, Pens, Preds, Blues, Jets or our dear Canucks, you fall into that last category.  There was a lot of variety this round, brawls, sweeps, and an endless game of musical goalies (Crawford-Darling-Crawford. Hammond-Anderson, Lack-Miller) As usual, there was something to cheer or jeer for everyone. From playoff beards to disappearing pucks, let’s breakdown the best and worst from the first round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.     Biggest Heroes Carey Price He basically stood...

The Game According to Twitter: Canucks 4 vs. Penguins 5 (SO)

Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s admirable that the Canucks fought back from a 2-goal deficit against the high-powered Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s likewise impressive that they scored 4 consecutive goals, the last 2 within a 17-second span in the third period to take a 2-goal lead of their own. What sucks is that they blew a lead late – again. They allowed the Pens to tie the game late – 2 goals in 16 seconds with a minute left in the third period to be precise – and proceeded to lose 5-4 in the shootout. The Canucks have now...

Game Day Preview Canucks vs. Penguins: Can the Canucks slow down Sid?

(source: nhl.com) Vancouver Canucks (23-13-8) Pittsburgh Penguins (31-12-1) By giving up the game-winning goal with 0.6 1.3 seconds left in OT to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks extended their winless streak to 4 games. And it doesn’t get any easier tonight as they face the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lead the NHL’s Metropolitan Division by 17 – yes, 17 – points and have won 15 of their last 18 games. Oh yeah, and the Penguins just got Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang back from injury. Tonight’s game marks the first of the Canucks short, two-game home stand before...

The Game According to Twitter: Canucks 3 vs. Penguins 4 (SO)

The Vancouver Canucks played the Pittsburgh Penguins in an early morning match-up so we get a dose of Sidney Crosby with our eggs and coffee. And that’s not even the best part. See, after globetrotting over the last few months, Lizz Moffat is back. And so is The Game According to Twitter. #CHBHaiku: Welcome back #TGATTOne and only @lizzmoffatBack in full effect — Clay Imoo (@CanuckClay) October 19, 2013

Out of Town Notebook: Patrick Roy vs. Ken Dryden and the Eastern Conference Playoff Race

The Globe and Mail report that Patrick Roy is waiting in the wings to take over the Montreal Canadiens after this season is not unexpected. Rumours for months have made it seem like a Quebec-centric bidding war has developed between the Habs and prospective Nordiques franchise over the services of Mr. Roy. Interestingly though, yesterday’s news turned my inbox into a debate over the merits of Patrick Roy. Not necessarily his merits behind the bench or in the executive suite, but on the ice. The question was – who was a better goalie, Ken Dryden or Patrick Roy? It’s the type...

Out of Town Notebook: The Forgotten All-Star Classic

Usually – you know, when the league’s marquee player isn’t in a snit and boycotting the All-Star game – the narrative surrounding the NHL’s mid-season classic (in this case classic is defined as “tired tradition”) is as follows: “How can we make this game suck less?” Ironically, 2012 represents the 25th anniversary of the best hockey that’s ever been played during an NHL All-Star event.  Wayne Gretzky himself called it the fastest-paced hockey he had ever played in. Rendez-Vous ’87 , which pitted a team of NHL All-Stars against a team from the Soviet Union, was the brainchild of then Quebec Nordiques owner...
