Luongo back on the ice

Luongo back on the ice

Finally, some good news (Jason Botchford, Vancouver Province): Roberto Luongo is back. No, he’s not yet ready for a game, but Luongo took a big step in that direction when he returned to the ice Monday morning in Columbus. In full equipment, Luongo stretched and skated around the rink, the best sign yet he will be back in the Canucks’ lineup sooner than later. This isn’t a knock on Sanford and Schneider as both have been very good in relief. However, seeing Lui – the team’s captain and emotional leader – back on skates is a sweet, sweet sign for...

The Sanford and Schneider show

We should find out the results of Roberto Luongo’s MRI after the Monday morning skate (TSN), so until then, we’ll be sitting on pins and needles. Of course, the hope is that the injury is relatively-minor – i.e. that he didn’t tear anything – and that he could be back on the ice in a couple of weeks or so. Just for fun, here are the number of games Lui would miss depending on how long he’s out for: 1 week: 3 games (2 home, 1 away) 2 weeks: 7 games (2 home, 5 away) 4 weeks: 12 games (5...

My goalie is better than your goalie

My goalie is better than your goalie

Some trash talk from Stan Fischler before tonight’s Canucks/Rangers tilt: I watched the Canucks lose a shootout to the Islanders on Monday evening at Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum and found the Vancouver sextet competitive, but hardly overwhelming. Yes, Roberto Luongo is a legitimate Vezina Trophy candidate, but then again, so is Henrik Lundqvist. Plus, Henny wins more games than Roberto and, hey, Luongo couldn’t even defeat Joey MacDonald in the showdown shootout duel. Oh the horror! Maybe I should remind the Maven that his Rangers lost to the same Islanders a couple of weeks ago. Heck, they lost 2-1 and...

Yesterday, Iain MacIntyre delivered the Vancouver Sun’s petition to allow Roberto Luongo to wear the ‘C’. Unfortunately, the response was as was probably expected: Daly was impressed by the passion of Canuck fans, but unmoved. The rule stands. He said Canuck general manager Mike Gillis raised the captaincy question at GM meetings last month, but there wasn’t strong sentiment either way. In case you’re wondering, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was a little busy Tuesday morning. Bettman had his three-year-old nephew in his office, where there is a Stanley Cup made of Lego, because the boy’s mom was delivering him a...

A plea to give Bobby Lou the “C”

I must’ve missed this online petition when I was away. Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner c/o NHL New York 1185 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036 Mr. Bettman, More than 2,200 Vancouver Sun readers have spoken and implore you to alter National Hockey League rules to allow Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo to wear the ‘C’ as the team’s captain. The Canucks have named him their leader, on and off the ice, and we join fans of the team, and the league, in requesting you address this matter with the utmost urgency so he can finish the season recognized...
